Here’s how Markel’s dedicated crisis response team has helped camps manage traumatic events:
When a particularly nasty strain of intestinal virus invaded northwest Connecticut, one Markel camp was hit hard. Within hours half the campers and staff were ill, leaving the camp nurse virtually on her own to combat the bug. The camp director called his Markel agent, who called the home office, which rallied the crisis response team. To stabilize the situation and ensure that the healthy campers remained adequately supervised, the team paid to hire temporary medical and line staff. The team paid to hire a linen service to control the spread of illness and speed recovery. These measures worked—48 hours later all campers and staff were back on their feet, enjoying camp.
In a tragic turn of events, a camp counselor was killed in a car accident one day before camp opened. The young man had worked at camp for the past five years, and was extremely well liked and respected by the other staff members. His death devastated the staff, and the director called Markel to determine what sort of help was available. The crisis response team met immediately, and sent a grief counselor to provide much-needed support to the counselors and staff. Thanks to this crisis intervention, the camp opened on schedule, and the staff was emotionally prepared to cope with the situation.
